Food security: Cong to hold overnight dharnas

The first such protest will be held in Varanasi on December 26 and 27 with demands for the implementation of the food security scheme.

Hoping that a new, experimentative style of protest will draw more public attention on the alleged non-implementation of food security scheme in UP,the Congress has decided to stage round-the-clock sit-in and follow it up with an aggressive protest, instead of holding few hour-long dharnas.

The sit-in,named “Dera Dalo campaign”,will be staged in the presence of senior party leaders, including AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry and state president Nirmal Khatri, the party has decided.

The first such protest will be held in Varanasi on December 26 and 27 with demands for the implementation of the food security scheme. Sources say that even Union ministers,MPs and MLAs from the region will be invited.

“We have planned it,but its future would depend on how the state government responds to it and whether they allow us to sit on dharna overnight or not,” Mistry said.

Khatri informed that each region will see similar protests one after another, although the dates for all have not yet been decided.

To oversee the preparations,Mistry will hold a review meeting on December 14 in Varanasi.

Meanwhile, after BJP national president Rajnath Singh’s visit to the house of the farmer in Lakhimpur Kheri who had allegedly committed suicide recently, the state Congress committee, too, has planned to send a delegation to meet the farmer’s family on December 5.
