Five persons were killed in a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Sungadhi area of Kasganj on Saturday. According to residents of the area, which comes under the Ganga drainage basin, water in the locality receded leaving behind large tracts of land. Two groups, one from Kilauni and another from adjacent Kisauli village, laid claim to the land. “Both groups occupied big portion of this land and have sown wheat. The groups have been at loggerhead over the same issue in the past too but no one had died then,” said Bikram Singh, resident of Kisauni.
The two groups had a confrontation on Friday too but the issue did not escalate. On Saturday morning, both groups gathered at the place again and this time matters went out of hand. Shots were fired and by the time police arrived at the scene, five people had been killed.
Ram Diwakar and Amrit Pal Diwakar from Kisauli and Shiv Ram Rathore and his family members, Sukhveer and Ram Kishore from the Kilauni were killed in the melee. Udayveer, Amrit Pal’s brother is critical while others too have sustained injuries.
“We have filed FIRs from both sides. Raids are being conducted to arrest those who indulged in firing. The critically injured man has been shifted to Aligarh while others are being treated at Kasganj,” said Kasganj SP Sunil Kumar Singh.
