The Jyotiba Phule Nagar police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons after alleged supporters of newly appointed minister Mehboob Ali opened celebratory firing to welcome him on Sunday. No one was injured in the incident. The case was lodged at the Didauli police station.
Mehboob Ali,against whom several criminal cases are pending,has won the election from Amroha constituency in JP Nagar. He is minister of state for silk and textile. The incident of celebrating firing took place when Ali was on the way to his hometown after taking oath.
Alis supporters greeted him by flashing guns in public and firing in the air as soon as he alighted from the train at Moradabad railway station. A victory march started from the station; many vehicles were part of the march. Once the minister reached Amroha,more men with firearms are said to have joined the celebrations.
The police have begun the process of identifying those involved in the firing; they have also found that some had fired from licensed firearms.
The matter had come to light when the media aired the incident. The police sought footage and photographs from media houses to identify the miscreants. SP,JP Nagar,Udai Pratap refused to share from where he got photographs and video footage of the incident but informed that we have identified eight persons and the process to cancel their arm licence has begun.
He added that the police were also probing the role of Inspector Rajveer Singh who was assigned to supervise the police arrangements when the procession entered the district. Singh is Station House Officer of the Didauli police station.
On Monday evening,the police registered the FIR under various sections of the IPCs including 286 (Negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance). Singh said there were over 100 vehicles in Alis procession.
The police said Ali was a history-sheeter of the Razabpur police station in JP Nagar. As per his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission,there are 15 cases,including dacoity,land grabbing and attempt to murder,pending against him. He has also been booked under the Goonda Act and the Gangster Act.
