A group of farmers Sunday blocked the Lalganj-Unnao railway track for hours demanding jobs to their family members in Rail Coach factory at Lalganj,as was promised by Congress president and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi.

The protest comes a day ahead of Sonia Gandhi’s visit to Rae Bareli. The coach factory is her dream project and the farmers, who led the protests today, had given their land for the factory.

The agitation affected the movement of several trains and many, including Rae Bareli passenger,Allahabad-Rae Bareli passenger and Prayagraj Express, were delayed.

The farmers have been protesting near the rail coach factory site for the past three days, but decided to block the railway track on Sunday alleging that no one was listening to their demands despite “the promise made by Sonia Gandhi to provide job to one member of each family, who gave their land for the project.”

The farmers claimed that of about 1,340 families, who gave their land for the project,no job has been given to 128.

“After five years of starting the land acquisition at a very low rate, the Railways now tells us that our family members cannot be given job because of technical reasons. The promise made by Sonia Gandhi had no clauses,” said Raj Kishore Singh,a local farmer participating in the agitation.

He said that farmers had held protest ahead of last visit of Sonia Gandhi too. Then, senior officials of Railway ministry and those from Sonia Gandhi’s office had personally met them and taken their applications. “It has been more than one-and-a-half months and nothing has happened. We do not want to block roads or railway tracks, but have been forced to do so just to ensure that our demands reach the right ears,” said Singh.

However,a senior Railway official said that in the past they had increased the age of those, who could apply for the jobs in the factory from 35 years to 40 years in order to accommodate more people. But,they were ready for further discussions on the issue.

Sonia Gandhi would be in Rae Bareli Monday to launch and lay foundation stone of development projects.
