The Central Bureau of Investigation has asked UP Police to ensure adequate security of 50-year-old Brijesh Rai,who is one of the witnesses in the case of murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai,which took place in Ghazipur district in 2005.
The agency had investigated the murder case on the direction of the Allahabad High Court and filed chargesheet against 10 persons, including jailed MLA Mukhtar Ansari, his brother former MP Afzal Ansari, gangster Munna Bajrangi and others. Mukhtar Ansari is lodged in Agra Central Jail while Munna Bajrangi is lodged in Sultanpur district jail. Last month,on the direction of Supreme Court the trial of the case was transferred to Delhi.
While asking UP Police to strengthen the security of Brijesh Rai,the agency has noted the fact that two crucial witnesses in the case - S K Rai and Manoj Goud - had died under mysterious circumstance around three years ago. SK Rai was an eye-witness to the incident.
Brijesh Rai,a businessman and also cousin of Krishnandnand Rai,last month sent a letter to the agency stating that he had received an anonymous threatening call. The caller had asked him not to depose before the court or else suffer of dire consequences.
Taking note of the complaint, the agency wrote a letter to the UP DGP with the request of upgrading Brijesh Rais security. The letter from the DGPs office has been forwarded to senior officials of Varanasi and Ghazipur districts, with directions. Varanasi Range DIG A Satish Ganesh confirmed having received the letter from the DGP office.
Ghazipur SP Umesh Chandra Srivastava, who claims to have not received any letter till now, said on the direction of Allahabad High Court in 2007 security had been provided to six witnesses, including Brijesh Rai and Krishnanand Rais wife Alka Rai
On November 29,2005,Krishnanand Rai and six of his supporters were attacked and killed in Ghazipurs Baskania locality while they were in a car. Brijesh and others, including SK Rai,escaped unhurt because they were travelling in another car which was travelling at a distance.
After the murder,Brijesh Rai met senior government officials in Lucknow and demanded a CBI inquiry into the murder, but no one paid attention.
Later,in 2006,on a petition moved by Alka Rai,the Allahabad High Court ordered a CBI inquiry. During investigation it was found that Mukhtar had conspired in the murder while lodged in jail. Mukhtar surrendered on October 25,2005,in a case of communal riots at Mau in which seven people were killed.
