EC notices to 542 for not filing poll expense details

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to 542 candidates of 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections for not filing the expenditure details even more than one year after the polls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued notices to 542 candidates of 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections for not filing the expenditure details even more than one year after the polls. The commission has asked the candidates to file their expenditure details else they could be debarred from contesting any election for three years.

None of these candidates had won in the elections.

As per EC guidelines,candidates must file details of the poll expenditure account within one month of the announcement of poll results.

Among 542 candidates,25 are from national parties and others from state parties,registered unrecognised parties and independents.

Among those from national parties,15 are from Nationalist Congress Party (NCP),four are from BJP and two each from Samajwadi Party (Syed Ehtesham Ahmed from Rampur Khas and Janardan Prasad Ojha from Paniyara),Bahujan Samaj Party (Mahendra Kumar from Babaganj and Divesh Chandra Srivastava from Gorakhpur urban) and Indian National Congress (Saleem Akhtar from Baheri and Ajay Kumar Pasi from Soraon).

Notices have also been issued to 26 candidates of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC),the ruling party in West Bengal,and to 26 nominees of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP),a state party in Bihar.

Among other recipients of the notice are 69 candidates of Rashtriya Lok Manch (RLM),which Rajya Sabha member Amar Singh had floated after parting ways with Samajwadi Party.

No candidate of RLM and LJP had won in the Assembly elections.

Twenty-two candidates of Janata Dal (United),30 of Jan Kranti Party,13 of Peace Party,seven of Shiv Sena too have been issued the notice as have 30 candidates of Jan Kranti Party (Rashtrawadi) —- it’s patron and former Chief Minister Kalyan Singh had merged the party with BJP in January. Kalyan’s party too had failed to win a single seat in the election.

UP chief electoral officer Umesh Sinha said,“Notices have been sent to the candidates who have not filed poll expenditure details. Such notices will be issued to some more candidates in the coming days.”

The four BJP candidates who received notices include – Bharat Singh Yadav of Asmoli,Devendra Singh in Rampur Khas,Tribhuvan of Kunda and Lallu Prasad of Babaganj.

Contacted,Lallu Parasad confirmed receiving the notice. “I have been to the Collectorate office thrice in last three days to file the expenditure details,but the official concerned has remained absent.”

Bharat Singh Yadav of Asmoli said he could not file papers because of some confusion with his election agent.
