Within the next one month, residents of nine cities may no longer have to wait for municipal safai karmacharis for collection of solid waste.
Trucks and trolleys would reach every zone, ringing an alarm early morning,to collect solid waste from the doorsteps. People will also have the choice to dump the waste in bins which will be placed in every street of the town.
If any collection vehicle does not stop near the street, any person can register a complaint with the control room, which would immediately check the position of the vehicle with the help of the Global Positioning System (GPS).
The nine cities are Varanasi,Meerut,Mathura,Aligarh,Allahabad,Jhansi,Lucknow,Moradabad and Gorakhpur. The state government has selected four private firms to implement the Solid Waste Management project in these cities.
A2Z Maintenance has been selected to execute the project in Moradabad,Aligarh,Meerut and Varanasi, and Jyoti Enviro-Tech Private Limited in Lucknow. While Subhash Projects and Marketing have been chosen for Mathura and Allahabad,APR Projects will carry out the project in Gorakhpur and Jhansi. The state government recently issued the directives to start the door-to-door collection in these towns from May 1. But the selected firms are going to start awareness campaigns before the collection of the waste.
In Lucknow,Jyoti Enviro-Tech Private Limited would start door-to-door collection from last week of May while A2Z Maintenance would start it after few days in Varanasi,Meerut,Aligarh and Moradabad. According to the project conditions,we have to take over the complete collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste after eight months, but following the governments recent directive we are going to start the door-to-door collection from this month, said S Charanjeet Singh,Director,Jyoti Build-Tech Private Limited. Before starting collection, over 50 people in different groups would visit every locality and various institutions to create awareness among people about our collection method, Singh said.

Firms have been asked to choose areas where collection and disposal of waste is worst, said R K Gaur, technical advisor,Construction and Design Services,UP Jal Nigam the nodal agency of the project.
As land for the landfill site is not available as yet,we will dump the waste at sites where Municipal Corporation is dumping at Hardoi Road,Sultanpur Road and Faizabad Road, Singh said. A staff of over 2,000 members and 400 vehicles would be engaged to collect waste from 4 lakh houses. From May 1,we will start ground survey in the four towns and a route map would be prepared in a week. Awareness campaigns would be run in schools and public functions.
