A day after the Director General of Police issued a circular for holding local police station officers (SOs) accountable for incidents of celebratory firings in their police station areas,a man died in a celebratory firing at a marriage ceremony in Hardoi village.
Superintendent of Police,Hardoi,Rajesh K Srivastava has ordered an inquiry against Virendra Sonkar, the SO of Majhila police station, where the incident took place and has sought a report in three days. The inquiry will be done by Shahabad Circle Officer Mehmood Ahmed Siddiqui.
The police has confiscated the gun and arrested Jai Prakash alias Kallu for killing Dhananjay Singh,40.
Sonkar said there were many marriages on the same day and it was not possible for the police to check arms at all the functions.
He said legal action is taken against people carrying guns in public, but checking of arms at private birthday and marriage parties is difficult. Most of the marriage ceremonies are held inside houses or buildings and it is very difficult to go and find armed persons there,he added.
Also, many people object to police entry in their parties,he said.
After several incidents of celebratory firings during victory processions of SP leaders and weddings,DGP AC Sharma had issued a circular to book gun licence holders involved in such incidents. The DGP had said that local police station officers will be accountable for such incidents taking place in their areas. The district police chiefs will ensure penal action against station officers in such cases, the circular stated.
