The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday claimed to have exposed cheating — through the use of a “remote access tool” — at an examination centre of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) National Eligibility Test (NET).

One person has been detained for questioning, officers said. Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said that on a tip-off, an STF team conducted a raid at Subharti University in Meerut that is one of the examination centres.

The STF team said it found an “extra admin computer” in the server room, operational through the local area network (LAN). The team also found two laptops with a remote access tool installed. They seized a mobile phone from a person who was involved in the process of conducting the examination.  While checking the phone, the police found roll numbers and names of four candidates, as well as the  Internet Protocol (IP) addresses of their systems, on it.

Police claimed that the IP addresses of these candidates’ systems were shared with a person outside the examination centre, enabling that person to access the screens of the selected candidates. This “solver” helped these candidates in answering the questions, officers said.

The STF team also retrieved details of 11 other candidates, who appeared in the first and second legs of the examination on July 25, from a deleted file on the phone seized from the detained person.
