Three officials of the Saharanpur police and an equal number from the Excise department of the district were suspended today following mysterious deaths of 15 people in Deoband area since September 4.
A probe has been ordered to find out if the people died of consuming illicit liquor.
The forensic laboratory report is awaited to ascertain the exact cause behind the deaths of five persons. The last rites for others have already been performed and their family members have told the police that they died of illness.
Meanwhile,one Surajbhan was arrested along with three of his accomplices for allegedly selling illicit liquor.
The district administration has also sealed five of the licenced country liquor shops after collecting test samples.
Saharanpur SSP Amit Chandra said fears over sale of illicit liquor spread after two persons in Jadauda village died of consuming excessive liquor on September 4.
Later,13 others from other villages died between September 6 and 9. Locals suspected they too had died of illicit liquor.
The SHO of Deoband police station is among the policemen suspended for sitting idle on complaints of deaths being reported for the last six days,the SSP said.
