AN INQUIRY has been ordered against two police constables for allegedly molesting three sisters at their house in Kotwali area of Bahraich last Friday. Following this, Bahraich SP Saligram on Sunday suspended Rakesh Rai — one of the two constables — for negligence of duty.
Police said on Saturday, the victims’ mother had filed a complaint with the SP, seeking action against constables Rama Shankar and Rakesh Rai, who she claimed had visited her house in an inebriated condition on Friday evening and misbehaved with her three unmarried daughters.
She also claimed that constables had acted on the direction of their relative, with whom they have a property dispute.
Kotwali Station House Officser Rajendra Kumar Verma, while denying the allegations, said the policemen had gone to the victims’ house to probe a complaint of a scuffle.
“On Friday, a local, Firdaus, had met the constables and alleged that his uncle Kaleem had attacked his family over a property dispute. Following this, both the constables went to Kaleem’s house. They found Kaleem sitting outside his house… While they were bringing Kaleem to the police station, women members of his family arrived and forcibly released him. Kaleem then ran inside the house and the constables returned to the police station,” he added.
Irked, Kaleem’s family lodged a false complaint against the constables and accused them of molesting the girls, said the SHO. The girls are the daughters of Kaleem’s brother.
When contacted, Saligram said Rakesh Rai has been suspended on the basis of a preliminary inquiry, which has revealed that he went to the spot without intimating his senior officers and forcibly entered Kaleem’s residence to arrest him. “We will decide on the next course of action after we receive a detailed probe report,” he added.
