On his first visit to Lucknow after getting charge of Uttar Pradesh,AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry termed Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a “corporate sector candidate” and rubbished his claim of the “Gujarat model of good governance”.

He told partymen not to be affected by the “aura” created by Modi and Amit Shah as there is “no truth in the propaganda made by them about Gujarat”.

“Modi is nothing more than a candidate of the corporate sector who believe in taking gains from the country,” Mistry told mediapersons after holding day-long meetings with zonal incharges and party MLAs.

He said,“I know the Gujarat CM and his aide very well and their strategy also. But it is not going to work here. They create an aura about themselves and Gujarat, which is not real.”

Mistry, who also hails from Gujarat,is seen as the Congress counter to Shah,an aide of Modi. The BJP recently made Shah the general secretary in charge of UP.

Objecting to the comparison,Mistry said,“I never went to jail like him. I have never been involved in a fake encounter case like him, thus there is practically no comparison between us.”

Comparing Gujarat with other states,Mistry said,“Modi talking about the Gujarat model of development is an irony. What Gujarat model does he talk of? Industrial investment in Gujarat is far behind compared to Orissa, social indicators in the state are far behind Kerala, the state is also lagging in primary education. In malnutrition, even states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are better off. So they better not talk about the Gujarat model.”

Mistry said Modi talked of governance, but ministers,IPS as well as IAS officers in Gujarat have gone to jail on serious criminal allegations.

Claiming that the Modi factor did not work before him in the Gujarat Assembly election,Mistry said the Congress won six out of seven Assembly seats that fall under Sabarkantha Lok Sabha constituency, which he once represented.

“There is a difference in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. We could not perform well in Assembly elections in Gujarat due to our organisational weaknesses in the state but Parliament election is different and the Modi factor will not work anywhere,” he said. Besides,“UP is UP. The state that gives a message of brotherhood to the entire country cannot be Gujarat.”

After his discussions with zonal incharges and party MLAs,Mistry finalised a statewide tour programme from July 9 in two phases. The first phase will be from July 9 to July 14 and second phase from July 18 to July 24. State Congress president Nirmal Khatri said,“During the tour,we will inaugurate zonal headquarters for our eight zones.”
