With the Municipal Board in Rampur on a demolition spree of nawabi era gates in the city,Congress MLA Nawab Kazim Ali Khan alias Naved has shot off letters to President,Prime Minister,Governor and Union minister for Culture, blaming state’s urban development minister Azam Khan for demolishing these gates.

Azam is urban development minister and governs the Municipal Corporations,Municipal Boards and Town Area Committees across the state.

When contacted, executive officer,Municipal Board,Rampur,Shahenshah Wali Khan claimed that the demolished gates were cited as dangerous for public by PWD engineers. “We demolished them and few more gates will be demolished after the survey. If Nawab Kazim Ali Khan is so much worried,he is free to undertake take repairing of these gates on his expense. As per records, these gates are our property,” he stated.

Since the Samajwadi Party (SP) assumed power in the state, four gates constructed in 1892 by the Nawabs of Rampur — Farrash Khana Gate,Topkhana Gate 1 and 2 and Shahabad Gates — have been demolished by Municipal Board on grounds that they are dangerous and a risk to people.

During the previous SP regime,Delhi Gate was demolished in Rampur.

Now,four more gates — Nawab Gate,Khusro Bagh Gate,Mori Gate and Bareilly Gate — are on the radar of the Municipal Board for demolition. No such demolition took place between 2007-12 of BSP regime.

“I had written to everyone, from President,Prime Minister,Governor and Union minister for culture about the fury of Azam Khan who is bent upon demolishing every structure of Rampur’s history,” Kazim Ali said.

He also alleged that the bricks and steel girders used in the construction of the gates are sent to Azam’s Jauhar University for construction.

“I had taken pictures of trucks loaded with the bricks of these demolished gates entering Jauhar University. I gave an application to Superintendent of Police (SP) in Rampur, but no action has been taken,” Kazim Ali alleged.

“We auction the material and we are not bothered where it is utilised. Nawab Kazim Ali Khan has some tussle with minister Azam Khan and he is targeting the Municipal Board,” Wali said

Kazim Ali also alleged that the gates are demolished during night. “Power is snapped and heavy police force is deployed blocking all the roads. Big earth moving machines are pressed into service and the whole exercise is completed during night,“he claimed.

Chief Archaelogical Superintendent,P K Mishra claimed that the gates in Rampur were not protected monuments and thus Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) has no control over them. “It may be socially wrong, but legally we cannot do anything,” he stated.
