Three days after a blast at the staff quarter of a community health centre in Kanpur that killed four persons, the police arrested the occupant of the house,Rajesh Kumar Gautam, from Barasirohi area under Kalyanpur on Sunday.
Gautam, who was absconding since the blast took place, has admitted that his sisters fiance Sudhir Kumar used to illegally make firecrackers at his residence, said the police. Gautams sister,Pinky, and Sudhir they were getting to be married in November died in the blast along with his cousin Jitender and Sudhirs brother Nand Kishore.
Police believe that Gautam and his relatives were actively involved in making illegal firecrackers and plan to arrest his elder sister Renu and brother-in-law Mangal Singh, both residents of Farrukhabad district.
Gautam, however, told the police that he did not know from where Sudhir used to get explosives and other raw materials for making the firecrackers.
The DIG of Kanpur,Prem Prakash, said Mangal Singh had advised Gautam to surrender before the court and shift the entire blame on Sudhir. But we arrested him before he could go to court, added Prakash.
Later speaking to the media,Gautam said that he came to know Sudhir nine months ago when his marriage with Pinky was being finalised. Sudhir,a resident of Etawah, used to frequently visit his flat and last month he told him that he wanted to make firecrackers at the flat in order to make money on Diwali.
I advised him not to do it but Sudhir ignored my warning and around three weeks ago,he brought raw materials for making firecrackers, said Gautam. A man named Rahul used to come and buy the crackers in bulk,he added.
He also said that during the time of explosion he was inside the flate but managed to escape. I was scared and went to a friend and spent the night there. Next day,I went to another friend at Mandana and then visited relatives in Fatehgarh and Farrukhabad for help,he said.
