The CBI is believed to be seeking more time to submit the findings in the murder cases of Family Welfare CMOs Dr V K Arya and Dr B P Singh and Deputy CMO Dr Y S Sachan before the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court.

Dr Arya and Dr Singh were shot dead near their residences in Lucknow on October 27,2010 and April 2 last year, respectively, while Dr Sachan’s body bearing injury marks and hanging from the toilet’s ventilator inside Lucknow district jail was recovered on June 22 last year.

On January 13,the court had granted two months to the CBI for submitting the reports in the murder cases. The deadline ends tomorrow.

A senior CBI official told The Indian Express that they will file applications tomorrow before the court seeking more time to complete the investigation in the murder cases of Dr Arya,Dr Singh and Dr Sachan.

He said they were working on some important clues in the murder cases of Dr Arya and Dr Singh. The role of two killers – Anand Tiwari and Vinod Sharma – in Dr Singh’s murder had been verified, but their role in Dr Arya’s killing had not been confirmed, the official added.

The UP STF and Lucknow Police had arrested Tiwari,Sharma and R K Verma on June 17 last year and recovered two pistols from their possession. The ballistic test had then confirmed use of the same pistols in the killings of Dr Arya and Dr Singh.

The police had claimed that Tiwari,Sharma and another accused Vijay Dubey had murdered both the CMOs and Dr Sachan had planned the murders with the help of his friend R K Verma.

While the recovery of pistols from Tiwari and mobile call details have confirmed his presence along with Sharma at the spot where Dr Singh was murdered, there is no evidence corroborating Dubey’s presence or his role in the murder.

CBI sources also said that the investigation of Lucknow police into the two murder cases had confused them,as the ballistic report which is verified by the CBI lab too has confirmed that the two pistols recovered by the police were used in both the murders. But,the CBI investigation so far could not find any evidence corroborating the link of Anand Tiwari,Vinod Sharma and Vijay Dubey with Dr Arya’s murder. Besides, the sources added, the CBI has also not found evidence corroborating the role of Dr Sachan and his friend Verma in the conspiracy for Dr Arya’s murder.

The sources said that the CBI has been probing the role of Anant Mishra,ex-Minister for Health in the Mayawati cabinet, and an accused in the NRHM scam Mahendra Pandey in the murder of Dr Arya. Mishra has been interrogated once.

Mishra’s role came under the scanner on the basis of details provided by his former colleague Babu Singh Kushwaha, who was arrested in the NRHM case on March 3. According to sources,Kushwaha had told the CBI that Arya was close to him and the latter had refused to entertain contractors and firms with which Mishra had close links.

The CBI will seek time from the court to interrogate some important witnesses for the Dr Arya murder case.

The CBI has recorded statements of 200 witnesses and collected 230 documents in connection with the cases of Dr Arya and Dr Singh so far.

In the Sachan case, the Investigating Officer had appeared before the court on January 13 seeking two months’ time to complete the investigation.
