The CBI is probing whether former Lucknow CMO Dr A K Shukla had a role in the conspiracy behind the mysterious death of Deputy CMO Dr Y S Sachan whose body, bearing injury marks, was found in an unused toilet of the Lucknow district jail on June 22 last year.

The CBI questioned Dr Shukla, who is already an accused in the case of murder of former CMO Dr V K Arya,on Wednesday regarding Sachan’s death. He was questioned last week also, sources said.

Dr Shukla is also an accused in the case of financial irregularities in the implementation of NRHM in Lucknow. He has got bail in that case,as also the case of murder of Dr Arya. The sources said Dr Shukla had served as medical officer at Lucknow district jail for about three years before he was posted as CMO of Lucknow. The CBI is collecting information about Dr Shukla’s links with jail staff who had reportedly arranged his conversation with Dr Sachan while the latter was admitted in the jail hospital on June 17.

The UP STF had worked out CMO Dr BP Singh murder case on June 17 and arrested alleged shooters Anand Prakash Tiwari and Vinod Sharma, and R K Verma who had hired them at Dr Sachan’s instance. The police later claimed that the same accused had killed Dr Singh’s predecessor Dr V K Arya earlier.

Both were shot within six months while taking a morning walk. Forensic tests showed at least one weapon was common in both crimes. The police said Dr Sachan got Dr Singh killed in a fight over kickbacks and also because Dr Singh had threatened to order inquiries into actions of Dr Sachan when he functioned as CMO.

CBI sources said they have information that Dr Sachan was upset over arrest of the shooters and had called up Dr Shukla on June 17 evening seeking his help.

Dr Sachan had talked to Dr Shukla on June 20 also when his wife had come to visit him in jail. Dr Sachan had asked his wife to hire a leading lawyer to defend his case the same day. He had also told his wife that he will come out clean in the case.

The sources also said that the CBI is questioning Dr Shukla about the conversation he had with Dr Sachan twice within a week before he died mysteriously.
