The CBI,investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl whose body was found hanging from a tree at the Nighasan police station premises in Lakhimpur Kheri district on June 10,2011,filed a chargesheet against four policemen including Deputy SP Inayatullah Khan on Saturday.
Inayatullah, who is presently posted at PAC 35th Battalion in Lucknow, was then posted as a circle officer (CO) in Kheri. The three other cops are Khans gunner Atiq Ahmed and constables Uma Shankar and Shiv Kumar.
CBIs special public prosecutor,KP Singh said the chargesheet was filed in the court of Special Judicial Magistrate Mirza Zeenat. The court fixed April 1 for the next order,he added.
Singh said that Atiq had been chargesheeted on murder charges, while others have been booked for destruction of evidence.
After the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree on the premises of Nighasan police station, her parents alleged that policemen had raped and then killed her. However, the police claimed that the girl had committed suicide. The post-mortem confirmed asphyxia due to hanging causing the death, but it ruled out rape.
Following protests, the government ordered a second post-mortem by a panel of five doctors. This time, strangulation was found to be the cause of death but rape was again ruled out. The government suspended 10 policemen and handed over the case to the CB-CID,which found involvement of three constables – Atiq Ahmad Shiv Kumar Singh and Uma Shankar Singh. They were arrested and sent to jail.
In 2011,the state government recommended a CBI investigation into the case.
