CBI catches Railways officer taking bribe

The CBI on Wednesday caught red-handed a divisional finance manager of the Northern Eastern Railways while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 at his office in Bareilly.

Lucknow: The CBI on Wednesday caught red-handed a divisional finance manager of the Northern Eastern Railways while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 at his office in Bareilly. A CBI team is carrying out a search at two houses owned by the officer in Lucknow. A CBI official said DFM Deepak Kumar Mehrotra,posted with NER’s Izzat Nagar division at Bareilly,had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 72,000 from contractor Manoj Jain for clearing a bill of Rs 72 lakh.

Pranab to attend BBAU convocation ceremony on May 10

Lucknow: President Pranab Mukherjee will be the chief guest at the convocation of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) on May 10,university spokesperson Govind Pandey said on Wednesday. “Apart from the medal winners for the 2012-13 academic session,winners of the 2011-12 session will also be awarded,” he said adding that a committee will be set up which will decide the medal winners as well as the programme schedule. The last convocation at the central university took place in October 2010,when former president APJ Abdul Kalam was the chief guest,he said.

Police team held hostage by angry mob in Bahraich

Bahraich: A team of policemen had to be rescued by colleagues after they were held hostage by irate locals who prevented them from making an arrest in a murder case in the district’s Barae Bilasa village,police said Wednesday. Villagers pelted stones at the police team led by Galla Mandi chowki in-charge Radhey Shyam Dwivedi before holding them hostage when they arrived at the village last night to arrest the murder accused.
