Amid the Telangana heat,Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the Centre should give consent to the creation of new states in Bundelkhand and western UP.
The Centre has asked the Andhra Pradesh government to pass a resolution in the Assembly for the creation of Telangana. We demand that the Centre give a similar consent for the creation of new states in Bundelkhand and western UP, Mayawati told the media in Lucknow.
I had sent a similar letter to the Prime Minister on March 15,2008,pleading the case for the division of UP into smaller states. I had urged the Prime Minister to initiate the constitutional process for tangible progress in the direction of creation of new states by dividing UP, she added.
Stating that the Centres announcement for Telangana has strengthened the long-standing demand of creating new states in Bundelkhand and western UP,Mayawati said,Carving out new states is essential and my party and the government fully supports the popular sentiment.
Urging those in favour of new states to exert pressure on the Centre, she said: They should raise their demand in a disciplined manner and not take law in their hands at the instigation of some political party or person.
The Bundelkhand Mukti Morcha headed by actor Raja Bundela is spearheading a movement for statehood in Bundelkhand and the Rashtriya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh wants a Harit Pradesh carved out of 22 districts in western UP.
Mayawati said: If the Centre is willing,we are even prepared to pass a resolution for the creation of another state,Poorvanchal,in eastern part of UP. On October 9,2007,while addressing a rally in Lucknow,I had announced that my government was in favour of division of UP. On October 31,2007,I had announced in the Assembly that we were ready for the division of UP,provided the Centre takes the initiative.
