The Bahujan Samaj Party has decided to drop the names of its sitting MLA from Moradabad (West) Balram Singh Saini and Jiyaur Rehman, grandson of Sambhal MP Shafiqur Rahman Barq, from the list of candidates for the 2012 Assembly elections.
After the Moradabad (West) seat ceased to exist following delimitation, the party had shifted Saini to the Bellari seat, which is a new Assembly constituency. BSP MP Barqs grandson Rehmans name was also earlier announced as the partys nominee from Sambhal.
On Sunday, however,BSPs Rajya Sabha member and coordinator for West UP Munkad Ali announced the partys decision to change candidates for both the Assembly seats Bellari and Sambhal at a meeting of party workers in Moradabad.
The BSP has now selected Anil Choudhari as it nominee from Bellari in place of Saini while Rafatullah alias Neta Chhidda will contest from Sambhal.
Reports said the decision to drop Rehmans name has much to do with the decision to upgrade Sambhal as headquarters of the newly created district Bhimnagar.
Chief Minister Mayawati had on September 28 announced the creation of Bhimnagar district comprising Moradabads Chandausi and Sambhal and Badauns Gunnaur tehsils.
The decision to upgrade Sambhal as district headquarters of Bhimnagar district virtually backfired in the wake of an agitation launched by residents of Chandausi tehsil for shifting the district headquarters there.
Insiders in the BSP said the new Bhimnagar district was created on the suggestion of Sambhal MP Barq.
The creation of Bhimnagar badly damaged the BSPs prospects in Sambhal and its adjoining seats. There was anger among voters of Chandausi against Barq. The CM has perhaps tried to avoid problems by denying ticket to Barqs grandson Jiyaur Rehman, a source in the BSP said.
BSP sources said Sainis problem was that he was in the anti-Barq camp within the party in Moradabad.
Saini refused to comment while Barq could not be contacted.
Saini was elected to the state Assembly in the 2009 by-election to the Moradabad seat. The by-poll was necessitated because of the resignation of then SP MLA Rajiv Channa.
