Lucknow: With Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani going on leave for 10 days starting Monday,senior-most IAS officer V K Sharma,who was serving as chairman of the Board of Revenue,has been given his charge for the period. A 1976-batch IAS officer,Sharma was Agricultural Production Commissioner as well as principal secretary to the chief minister for a year during the Mayawati regime.

Social welfare scam: Two bank officials held

Muzaffarnagar: Two officials of a public sector bank were arrested for their alleged involvement in a multi-crore rupee scam in the social welfare department,police said Monday. The bank’s branch manager,Pramod Sharma,and cashier Rajender Sharma were arrested on Sunday in this connection,SP (City) Raj Kamal Yadav said. He also said a hunt was on to nab Anil Verma,the main accused in the scam that took place during 2008-09. A former district welfare officer,Rinku Singh Rahi,had alleged a multi-crore scam in the social welfare department by staging a dharna in Lucknow seeking reply to an RTI query in connection with the alleged scam.

TET passouts,Siksha Mitra to be appointed in govt schools

Lucknow: The state government on Monday decided to appoint Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) passouts and Siksha Mitra (ad-hoc primary teachers) in government schools. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by CM Akhilesh Yadav. TET examinations during the previous Mayawati regime were mired in controversy after the arrest of Director Secondary Education Sanjay Mohan for allegedly manipulating the list of passouts. The TET aspirants were protesting since then,demanding that the examination not be cancelled. Candidates who cleared TET 2011 can now be appointed as teachers in schools run by Basic Education Department and aided and private schools,an official release said.

Govt to allot land to people affected by flood

Lucknow: In a bid to rehabilitate flood-affected victims,the state government on Monday decided to purchase land and allot it to people displaced due to the natural calamity. The decision was taken at the cabinet meeting chaired by CM Akhilesh Yadav here. Land purchased by the government would be allotted free of cost to the displaced people,a statement said.
