Etawah: Veteran freedom fighter Vishnu Dayal Gupta died following prolonged illness at a hospital,family sources said Friday. He was 91. Gupta breathed his last on Thursday at Rural Institute of Medical Sciences in Saifai where he had been admitted a couple of days ago,they said. He is survived by two sons and three daughters. Gupta had taken an active part in the freedom movement and was also jailed during the period.

Advocate gets bail in lawyer murder case

Muzaffarnagar: An advocate,who is one of the accused in the murder of a Meerut-based lawyer,was granted bail by a local court. District Judge Rama Jain on Thursday granted bail to advocate Shahid Rana in the murder case of Rajiv Upadhay and directed him to furnish two sureties of Rs one lakh each. On June 11,27-year-old Rajiv was allegedly shot dead by his paramour’s husband Shahnazar,his two brothers Shahnoor and Shahbaz and Rana in Sujru village. All four accused have been arrested in the case.

Court rejects bail plea of 4 rape accused

Muzaffarnagar: The bail plea of four accused in the Shamli gangrape case has been rejected by a local court. The Additional District Sessions Judge Jai Shri Ahuja turned down the bail plea of Irshad,Furkan,Mannu and Ikram on Thursday saying there was no ground for them to get bail. A 21-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and gangraped by six persons in Shamli district on June 15. The rape case had led to angry protests by locals led by state BJP leader Hukum Singh during which vehicles and shops were allegedly damaged.

Four children drown in Aligarh


Aligarh: Four children,including three siblings and their cousin drowned on Friday after they slipped and fell into a pool of water in a waterlogged field. The children were identified as Habiba (8),Ruby (7),Sagheer (9) and their cousin Bhura (6),all residents of upper Kot locality in the old city. They had gone out to play in a field in the Mulla Para locality,which was waterlogged after heavy rain,creating pools,police said. The children were playing in one such pool without realising its depth and drowned in it,they said. One of their cousins,Sadiq who was sitting nearby noticed the mishap and called for help but by the time anyone could come to their rescue,the children had drowned.

Man hacks nephew to death,kills self

Lucknow: A mentally-challenged man in Kheri district hacked his 4-year-old nephew to death and attacked his sister-in-law,before ending his life by consuming some poisonous substance on Friday. The incident took place in Narang village of the district,police said. Kailash Kewat was said to be mentally unstable. He first killed his nephew Vivek and later attacked his sister-in-law with a sharp-edged weapon,leaving her grievously injured,they said. Kailash then consumed some poisonous substance and later died,police said.
