A MOB of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) degree holders, demanding government jobs in primary and secondary schools, clashed with the police in Lucknow on Tuesday. While they torched buses and government vehicles, including a police jeep, in front of the Vidhan Bhavan, the police used batons and water canons to quell the protest.

ASP (East) Rajeev Malhotra, ADM (City) Nidhi Srivastava and 16 other policemen suffered injuries in the clash. Some other persons, including journalists, were also reportedly injured in the incident.

Malhotra said the youths from different districts, under the banner of BPEd Sangharsh Morcha, had gathered outside Vidhan Bhavan and blocked the road. The protesters indulged in violence after police used force to disperse them. The youths pelted stones at policemen and torched five government vehicles and buses, he added.

“As many as 102 people have been arrested on charges of rioting and applying criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty,” Malhotra said while adding that agitators had not sought permission from district administration to hold the protest.

Lucknow District Magistrate Raj Shekhar said the administration is probing the reasons behind the clash and the action taken by police and administration officials.

The general secretary of the Morcha, Akash Gupta, claimed that about 50 protesters were injured in police action. “About 10,000 BP Ed degree holders, from all over the state, were peacefully demonstrating to press for appointment on 46,000 posts when the police resorted to action,” Gupta said, adding that police mercilessly beat up around 100 women members also. “Our president Dhirendra Yadav was also arrested,” he added.
