The Bharatiya Kisan Union, which had led negotiations with the BSP government last year on land acquisition policy and enhanced compensation, will ask the Samajwadi Party government to ensure better and free electricity supply for farmers, claiming that the party had promised this before elections.

The decision was taken after a BKU dharna in Muzaffarnagar district on Monday. BKU leaders locked Shahpur power station demanding proper electricity supply in the area. “The SP had promised to improve power supply for farmers and make it free. They are claiming 18 hours’ electricity supply to rural areas but many areas like Shahpur are not getting more than four hours’ supply. Irrigation has become impossible,” said BKU leader Rakesh Tikait.

He said BKU men locked up the power station in Shahpur. “It was hardly giving any power,so we thought it was better to lock it,” he said. The station was opened later in the day after a written assurance by the district administration that the farmers’ problems would be solved soon.

However,a delegation of BKU,led by Tikait, left for Lucknow to present their demands before the government. “We will be in Lucknow for the next two days and place our demands before the government, which will include better and free power supply as promised by the SP and also some local issues,” Tikait said. He said they would ask the government to at least present a plan on how it will make free power available to farmers.
