THE BJP on Tuesday began its campaign of ‘Swachh Kashi’ in the Prime Minister’s constituency of Varanasi to celebrate Narendra Modi’s birthday on September 17.
The PM will visit Varanasi on September 18, where he will launch several development projects, inaugurate BHU’s trauma centre and also address a public meeting.

As tourists have been found throwing waste in the Ganga, BJP leaders on Tuesday distributed nearly 200 free dustbins at Assi Ghat to boatmen, who take tourists for a ride in the river. As Modi will enter the 66th year of his life on September 17, the group leading the Swacch Bharat Mission, has decided to distribute 660 (multiples of 66) dustbins to boatmen within a week.
On Wednesday, BJP’s Investors Protection Cell, in collaboration with Varanasi chapter of Indian Dental Association and local brick klin owners, will distribute health hygiene kits like soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, tooth brush and masks to at least 300 labourers. The target is to distribute such kits to 6,600 labourers.
Between 7 am to 9.30 am on September 17, BJP leaders across Varanasi, including office-bearers, MLAs, MLCs and corporators, will clean roads in their respective municipal wards with brooms and dustbins. They will collect garbage and hand it over to municipal staff so that it is dumped outside the city. Public places like parks and temples will also be cleaned.
“All BJP leaders will clean the streets to gift a clean Varanasi to the PM on his birthday. The programme will also send out a message asking the people to clean Varanasi,” party spokesperson Ashok Pandey said.
“Special focus is being given to the route that the PM will take on September 18. The aim is to present a clean Varanasi when PM visits the city. Another objective is to appeal the people to keep their surroundings clean,” said Vaibhav Kapoor, BJP’s Investors Protection Cell convener for Kashi region.
The same evening, party workers will decorate Assi Ghat with Rangoli and put up a 66-metre banner on which locals can wish the PM. The BJP workers will gift that banner to Modi the next day. They will also lit 66 earthen diyas at the ghat where Modi had launched Swacch Bharat Mission in November last year.
In Jayapur village, adopted by the PM under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, villagers will celebrate Modi’s birthday as ‘Swacchta Diwas’. “All villagers will clean their surroundings and roads. A meeting to create awareness about cleanliness will be organised where pradhan Durgawati Devi will participate,” said Narain Singh Patel, Durgawati Devi’s representative. All villagers will also decorate their houses with Rangoli.
In 7,125 village panchayats of Varanasi, BJP workers have been directed to run cleanliness programmes on Modi’s birthday.
BJP state co-incharge Sunil Ojha, general secretary Ramapati Shastri and Kashi region president Laxman Acharya are looking after the preparations of the cleanliness campaign.
