BJP MP Yogi Adityanath was detained by the police

in Kanpur early on Monday when he was on his way to Jhansi from Gorkahpur to pay visit to a temple.

Fearing communal tension, after his organisation Hindu Yuva Vahini gave a call for ‘shuddhikaran’ (cleansing) of Mahakaleshwar temple in the city, the Jhansi administration had restricted Adityanath’s entry in the district.

As per the reports,Hindu Yuva Vahini has been demanding that some Muslim families who reside in shops built beneath the temple structure be removed.

R K Chaturvedi,DIG Kanpur range, said officials stationed at the Kanpur Central station deboarded Adityanath from Kushinagar Express after it reached the station around 2.20 am.

He said Adityanath was later taken to a guest house of Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary in Unnao district about 60 km from here. He,later in the day, reached Lucknow’s Amausi airport and left for New Delhi, the DIG added.

Adityanath, however, criticised the state government for its action. In a statement,he said he was going to perform only ‘jalabhishek’ (sacred bath of lord Shiva) at the temple. He said the government had acted to appease a section of the society.

However,Jhansi (Sadar) Sub-Divisional Magistrate Bhagwan Sharan said Adityanath was restrained from coming to the city as there was an apprehension of communal tension.

He said some pamphlets, claiming that the MP will remove the Muslim families living near the temple, were distributed in the city. He said the temple area is disputed and has a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims.
