The Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and a renowned scientist,Dr Lalji Singh,is now the chairman of the high-powered committee for regulation of stem cell and other cell-based therapies practiced in India,the university said in a press release.
The four-member committee,formed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare,will review the current scenario of stem cell therapy in the country,and make recommendations to Central Drug Standard Control Organisation for effective regulation of stem cell products and their research,the varsity said.
The committee will also suggest a road map to establish collaboration and training programmes with international agencies.
Dr Singh,a molecular
biologist,said that BHU
will provide national testing facility of international
standards for stem cells. The university also plans to establish a Centre for
Bone Marrow Transplant and Stem Cell Research and has constituted a multidisciplinary committee for the development of the facility,he added.
