Banaras Hindu University Vice-Chancellor Prof G C Tripathi has constituted a four-member committee to enquire into the violence that took place between two groups of students within the University premises on April 9 evening.
The committee, which will be headed by Commerce Faculty Head Prof Asha Ram Tripathi with Assistant Registrar (Education) Sudhir Kumar acting as the secretary, has been asked to submit its report on the facts and reasons behind the incident, reportedly a result of a minor issue, at the earliest.
On April 9, the inmates of Law Faculty hostel, Bhagwan Das, and IIT-BHU hostel, C V Raman, clashed over playing a game of cricket on the ground within the latter’s premises.
Around 20 students were injured and several vehicles were smashed. PAC personnel and the police had to be called in to restore calm. The University administration had got the two hostels vacated later in the night.
Meanwhile, the V-C has also issued instructions to all the officials concerned for ensuring that minimum sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor, are provided in each of the hostels. The V-C also asked the officials to identify available spaces in the hostels to construct sports facilities as per requirement and possibilities. Directions regarding the holding of monthly cultural and musical festivals at the hostels have also been issued, along with a directive to the experts to impart training in Yoga to the hostel inmates.
