Banaras Hindu University (BHU) will have an SC/ST (Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes) cell in every department and a permanent set-up will be institutionalised to deal with problems faced by members of the community.

BHU Vice-Chancellor Dr Lalji Singh made this announcement on Thursday while addressing SC/ST students, teachers and non-teaching staff at Uduppa auditorium at the university.

Chairman of the Press,Publication and Publicity Cell Prof Ravi Pratap Singh said: “The V-C was addressing issues which were of concern to the SC/ST community, including students, teachers and non-teaching staff within the university. He told them that every department would have a separate cell. He also asked the community members to seek to redress their grievances within the BHU set-up and not approach the higher levels for grievance redressal.”

In the past,SC/ST community members within BHU have been protesting against alleged harassment against them. A few cases were also directly reported to the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, which had taken cognizance of the same.

Dr Mahesh Prasad Ahirwar,an associate professor, who was part of the initiative to call the V-C for an interaction with members of the community within the university, said: “The V-C has agreed to all our demands. Apart from setting up SC/ST cell in every department,he has also agreed to an inquiry into the cases of alleged harassment of teachers so that the guilty can be punished.”

Dr Ahirwar added that professors and associate professors from various departments and belonging to the SC/ST community had decided to come together on the matter. “We had prepared a 16-point agenda, which was presented before the V-C. This included taking action against those guilty of harassing teachers, students or non-teaching staff from the SC/ST community. Also, backlog in filling up quota, the issues of hostel accommodation for Dalit students and several other matters were part of the agenda. The V-C has agreed to take action on all the points,” he said.
