Union Minister and Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma on Tuesday demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the death of Khalid Mujahid, one of the accused in the November 2007 blasts in the Lucknow and Faizabad courts.

Khalid died in police custody on May 18 while being taken to Lucknow jail from Faizabad after a court hearing. The minister, who is here in connection with the preparations of the party in the Handia assembly constituency bypoll on June 2,said: “Khalid was all right when he was taken to Faizabad. His condition deteriorated at Ram Sanehi ghat, which is around 30 km from Barabanki, and then he died soon.”

“The policemen could have done something to save him. I am not saying that the government is directly responsible. But if not the government, the police are definitely involved. The officers who framed him in 2008 in the first place could be responsible. The NIA should investigate the matter,” he said at a press conference.

He added that even when Khalid was arrested in 2008,he had held a press conference saying that an innocent has been framed.

Accusing SP and BJP of being hand-in-glove,Verma said the SP was not interested in setting free the innocent Muslims framed in terror cases.

“In the case of Tariq Qasmi,co-accused of Khalid, they gave a simple letter in the open court for withdrawal of cases. Why did they not attach the findings of the R D Nimesh Commission with that application?” he said.

Verma also added that the commission report, which came on August 31,2012,should have been tabled by the SP government by now.

Calling the attack in Chhattisgarh on Congress leaders on May 25 as “sad and unfortunate”,Verma said the state government,of whichever party, has the prime responsibility for security.

“We are being told that the route of the convoy was changed at the last minute. This is a matter of probe and a central agency must look into all aspects of the conspiracy,” he said.
