The state government’s decision to locate the headquarters of the newly created Bhimnagar district between Pawasa town of Sambhal tehsil and Bahjoi town of Chandausi tehsil is yet to get acceptance among the residents of both tehsils. Moreover, the government decision to make the district administration function temporarily from Bahjoi has crated further trouble for it.

On Saturday, residents of Sambhal town, led by Bar association of tehsil and munsif court Sambhal,National Integrated Medical Association(NIMA),and local traders’ association observed bandh in the town, while the lawyers at Chandausi tehsil who are protesting since October 30,have also decided to call for a bandh next week.

Protesters in Sambhal are demanding the district administration should function from Sambhal until the headquarters are set up at Pawasa. On the other hand, the protesters in Chandausi are demanding to set up the permanent headquarters at Bahjoi. They are also demanding for temporary headquarters at Chandausi.

In Sambhal, the market remained closed the whole day and traffic was blocked in various parts of the town. Chandausi roundabout, the major route for traffic in the town, was also blocked by the protesters, after 1 pm.

President of Muslim Vyapar Mandal,Haji Ehtisham, said they will not open the market till the district magistrate and SP comes to Sambhal to function from there. “This city has the infrastructure to run the district headquarters and CM had announced the creation of Sambhal district so the DM and SP should come and function from here till the headquarters get developed at Pawasa(of Sambhal tehsil),” said Ehtisham who is protesting at Sambhal tehsil.

The Bar association of Chandausi tehsil has categorically rejected the government’s proposal to establish the district headquarters on the 10 km stretch between Pawasa and Bahjoi. “We want the initial order of government to be restored which said the DM and SSP will function from Chandausi until the infrastructure gets developed at Bahjoi which was to be made permanent headquarter,” said Amar Singh Yadav, president of Chandausi tehsil bar association.

Chandausi tehsil bar association, vyapar mandal, and political party representatives,on Saturday, held a meeting where it was decided to observe bandh in the next week for their demand. “We will consult the residents of Gunnaur tehsil and then decide the time frame for protests,” Yadav said.

Bhimnagar is one of the three new districts whose formation was announced by Chief Minister Mayawati on her visit to western UP last month. Other two districts were Prabudhanagar and Panchseelnagar. Bhimnagar was created by assimilating Sambhal and Chandausi tehsils of Moradabad district and Gunnaur tehsil of Badaun district.

District Magistrate of Bhimnagar Pragyan Ram Mishra said he will keep functioning from Bahjoi as per the government order.

BSP Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal Shafiqur Rahman Barq who had been leading the campaign for the formation of Sambhal district, said he had informed Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh about the people’s desire to set up the district headquarters in Sambhal. “I and my party members are not part of these protests,” he said.
