One of the main accused in the Axis Bank ATM theft case,Bhupesh Kushwaha,was arrested in Allahabad on Monday. Police recovered Rs 1.8 lakh in cash from Bhupesh. After he went missing on July 13,Bhupesh visited several places,including Lucknow and Delhi. Superintendent of Police (City) Shailesh Kumar Yadav said,He shifted his base consistently to evade the police.
Bhupesh,who was the cash custodian in Cash Management Services (CMS),a security agency involved in transporting cash for Axis Bank,was arrested near Qila Ghat in Sangam area.
However,even before he went missing,Bhupesh had managed to distribute the money that was siphoned off from different ATMs. He had taken out Rs 58 lakh from eight ATMs on the day he went missing. On the instructions from the mastermind Anoop Kumar Srivastava he had given him the entire amount. But Anoop had directed Bhupesh to deposit Rs 18 lakh back into the ATM,as the audit by an officer of the CMS was due. Anoop kept the remaining Rs 40 lakh. We have recovered nearly Rs 24 lakh from the accused, said Circle Officer (Civil Lines) Gyanendra Nath Prasad. Efforts are on to trace the remaining cash, said Prasad.
Another cash custodian Awadesh Pal,and a local TV channel reporter Naresh Kushwaha have been already arrested.
