A three-member judicial commission, constituted by the UP government to probe into the entire incident, also visited the crime scene along with the team of senior officers set up by the UP Police to supervise the SIT investigation.
ADG Bhanu Bhaskar, Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma and Joint Commissioner of Police Akash Kulhari were present when the scene was being recreated.
The three alleged assailants – Lavlesh Tiwari (22), Mohit alias Sunny Puraney (23) and Arun Kumar Maurya (18) – who are currently in the SIT’s custody were not brought to the crime scene. The policemen, who were escorting Atiq and Ashraf at the time of the murder, were called to the spot.
On Wednesday, the UP Police suspended five policemen — the SHO of Shahganj where Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf were shot dead, a sub-inspector and three constables – for “negligence”.
Police said recreating the crime scene is likely to provide clues in the investigation and the accused can be interrogated on the basis of them. The three alleged assailants, who have been booked for murder and under the Arms Act, were sent to SIT custody till April 23 by a court.
The three-member SIT team is headed by Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, Satish Chandra. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali police station) Satyendra Prasad Tiwari and Inspector (Investigation Cell of Crime Branch) Om Prakash are two other members of the team.
