World Bank will work to eradicate poverty from UP
Jim Yong Kim,the World Bank Group president,who met Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday,said that the bank would work to eradicate poverty from Uttar Pradesh and usher in sheer prosperity in the largest state of the country.
Addressing a joint press conference with the CM,Jim said: Till now we had a very nice association with the state and we will continue it in future. Responding to a querry,he said that the World Bank had a very fool proof methodolgy to detect fraud.
We conduct regular auditing for every project, he stated. Kim said that discussion with Akhilesh ranged on sectors as irrigation,health,sodic land reclamation etc. Jim praised the state governments free laptop scheme for students. I read about it. The effort is good and Akhilesh also understands it. But technology is one thing and connectivity,ability to use software is another. But as youngest CM in India,he has made good commitments which will yield good results, he stated.
Earlier,the CM welcomed Jim and his team members and highlighted the efforts of his government and journey with World Bank in agriculture,education,irrigiation projects.
World Bank officials said that the assistance requested by the UP Government includes $1.5 billion for state roads,which will be in three phases of $500 million each,$1 billion for strengthening and setting up urban infrastructure systems,and $460 million for the UP Water Sector Restructuring Project II.
Currently,the state has two projects namely $96 million Uttar Pradesh Sodic Land Reclamation III project and the $148 million Uttar Pradesh Health Systems Strengthening Project. In addition,the state receives about $1.8 billion as part of ongoing national multi-state projects,including the National Ganga River Basic Project and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor.
