As Suar bypoll nears, SP urges poll officer: Shift Moradabad DC

The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Friday wrote to the UP Chief Election Officer asking him to shift Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh in view of the coming bypoll for Suar seat in Rampur, which fell vacant after senior Abdullah Azam Khan was disqualified from the state Assembly.

Abdullah, son of senior SP leader Azam, won Suar in 2017 and followed it up with another victory last year. However, he was disqualified as an MLA on February 15 after he was convicted by a special court along with his father in a 2008 case.

The letter, written by state president Naresh Uttam Patel says, “The current Moradabad Divisional Commissioner Aunjaneya Kumar Singh has been the DM of Rampur for a long time. Rampur is also under the division. In the 2022 Assembly polls, he (Singh) was accused of working like a BJP worker regarding which a complaint was filed with the ECI on January 29, 2022, seeking his transfer.”

As per the schedule, the notification for the bypolls for Suar and another seat will be issued on April 13, and April 20 will be the last date to file nominations. Polling will be held on May 10 and counting on May 13.

The letter also says that another complaint seeking Singh’s transfer was submitted on November 7, 2022, before the Rampur bypoll.

“Despite multiple complaints, Singh has not been removed from the post of Moradabad Divisional Commissioner raises questions of the reliability of the ECI,” says the letter.

It adds that the SP demands for an “independent, unbiased, fearless” election and for that Singh should be removed from his post.
