Two persons received gunshot injuries during a clash between two Shia groups over the UP Shia Central Waqf Board’s disbanding of the old committee of Dargah Hazrat Abbas on charges of embezzlement of funds in the old city area on Thursday.

A heavy police force was deployed and senior police officials were camping at the spot to maintain law and order. The injured were undergoing treatment at the CSMMU trauma centre.

Lucknow SP City (West) Rakesh Singh said the clash took place in Saadatganj police station area after the Shia Waqf Board appointed Rafiqul Hasan as the new Mutwalli of Dargah Hazrat Abbas committee. The old one was disbanded last evening.

Singh said that Rafiqul Hasan, accompanied by some officials of the waqf board, reached the dargah around 3.30 pm to take charge. When waqf board officials started taking possession of the cash boxes and other property, former Mutwalli Hidayat Nawaj and his associates arrived.

Nawaj and his men threatened Hasan and board officials, asking them to leave, the SP City said. This led to a heated exchange between the two groups, sparking the clash. Some youths among the troublemakers opened fire, causing bullet injuries to Danish and Faizan.

The senior police officials rushed to the site with PAC and the local police and dispersed the troublemakers.

Chairman of UP Shia Central Waqf Board Wasim Rizvi said,“I had disbanded the old committee yesterday after an audit found embezzlement of funds to the tune of several lakhs from the dargah treasury.” He added,“I appointed Rafiqul Hasan the new Mutwalli today and he had come to take charge in the afternoon when former Mutwalli Hidayat Nawaj and his associates attacked him and fired gunshots, causing injuries to two youths.”

The SP City said that a meeting was being held in the presence of the waqf board chairman and others to settle the matter. A case is yet to be registered,he said.
