A police constable was shot dead allegedly by a group of criminals in Bareillys Cantonment area during a police raid at the house of an alleged robber late on Friday.
A team of police led by Cantonment Station Officer Akhtar Sajjad had gone near Babhia village after being informed about the presence of some persons who had allegedly robbed a villager of Rs 2,500 Friday evening.
According to the police,the team caught one of the alleged robbers,Sarvesh Kashyap,while his associates escaped from there.
Police said Kashyap was brought to the police station and questioned. He revealed the name of one of his accomplices,Karan Gangwar alias Chhotu,also a resident of Babhia village.
A police team led by Sajjad again went to the village to arrest Chhotu. However,on reaching there,the police did not find Chhotu at his home. They then detained his father Krishnapal for questioning.
Krishnapal,too,was wanted in a case under the Excise Act,the police said.
Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhary said as the police team was preparing to return from the village with Krishnapal,a group of miscreants fired indiscriminately at them. A bullet hit Anirudh Yadav (40),driver of the police jeep,on his neck.
Kulhary said the police also fired in retaliation. However,the miscreants managed to free Krishnapal and carry him with them.
Yadav was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The 40-year-old constable was a resident of Gorakhpur and had been posted in Bareilly for about two years.
