STUDENTS OF Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Mallapuram centre, in a letter to Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah, have accused a faculty member of harassing girls by entering their hostel without intimation and calling them at odd hours to get information about other girls.
The students are staging a dharna at the administrative block on Mallapuram campus for the last four days demanding action against M H Faridi, an assistant professor in the law department at AMU’s Mallapuram centre. He is also the proctor of the centre.
“Since our demands were not met, we are sitting on a dharna. It is shameful to describe the behaviour of the faculty member towards girls,” a girl student told The Indian Express from Mallapuram.
When contacted, Faisal K P, PRO of AMU Mallapuram centre, said: “We have come to know of the demand of the students. Faridi also holds the post of proctor, which has been opposed by the students. Now, Faridi has resigned… his resignation has been accepted and he will not be given any official post.”
AMU’s PRO at Aligarh, Dr Rahat Abrar, claimed that charges against Faridi need to be examined, following which, any step will be taken.
Director of the Mallapuram centre, H Abdul Azeez, has reached out to the students and is currently holding discussion with them to end their agitation.
The letter — signed by over 100 students, including over 50 girls — has alleged that Faridi, despite no official authority, visits the girls’ hostel often without intimation. He also makes girls sit in his chamber for long hours.
At odd hours, he calls up girl students and asks for information about other girls. He had even called up the parents of some girls and given them false information about their activities. Students claimed that already, two girls have left their studies, due to his high handedness.
“We are facing mental trauma. We had informed the authorities in the past too but no one took notice. This has emboldened him. We are fed up with his harassment,” a girl student said.
A similar complaint was lodged against Faridi last year also but no action was taken against him.
