At a time when the Congress and BJP are sparring over the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav Saturday asserted the legacy of party’s own ideological icon Ram Manohar Lohia.

Speaking at the first convocation of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University (RMLNLU) in Lucknow,Mulayam spoke of the role played by him for the betterment of society. Narrating accounts from Lohia’s life,Mulayam asserted Lohia’s contributions and highlighted his struggles; with SP deriving its ideology from Lohia’s legacy. He also asked the university to ensure Lohia’s works are made available to students.

Mulayam also suggested politics as a career option for students.Congratulating the pass-outs,he said “they will now be taking immense responsibility. Either they will be lawyers,or officers, but it is also possible they can come and support us in politics.” Mulayam also chose the occasion to remind them to not give judgments merely on the basis of media reports.

“I expect you (the degree recipients) to not carry out justice merely on the basis of allegations levelled by someone, with newspaper cutting (as evidence),” he said, adding that many “good people have also been awarded punishment (in this manner).”

“Don’t be scared of newspapers. I never got scared of them. They constantly wrote against me for 11 years and there were s no allegations which were not levelled against me; but I continued to work and their pens got tired…now I am where I am,” he added. On the occasion,Mulayam and Supreme Court judge Justice A K Sikri were conferred doctorate degrees.
