Amethi police on Thursday booked a doctor of the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for alleged medical negligence after he was accused of performing a surgery in inebriated condition, leading to a patient’s death.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Additional Superintendent of Police (Amethi) Harendra Kumar said the FIR was lodged on a complaint by the patient’s family, adding the autopsy report does not confirm the exact cause of death.

“The investigation will find out the truth behind the allegations. To probe the allegations of medical negligence, a panel of medical experts will be formed,” Kumar said.

The hospital authority denied the allegations and said an internal inquiry has been ordered. “The allegations are wrong as the patient was being treated by very experienced doctors, who tried their best to revive the patient. The patient was admitted a day before with cardiac issues, and was taken for angioplasty, where a stent was inserted by Dr Satyendra Tiwari, an experienced doctor. When the condition of the patient deteriorated, he was put on a ventilator.”

Sharma said that when the patient could not be revived despite the best of attempts, a junior doctor had gone to inform the attendants, who allegedly manhandled him.

“We have constituted an internal inquiry as well, but no one can raise any doubt over the treatment, which was given under senior and experienced doctors, who were all in their best senses,” the COO added.

According to the complaint, 75-year-old Shivram Mishra was brought to the hospital on Wednesday evening with cardiac problem. The ASP said the patient underwent surgery and later around 1.30 am he was declared dead. The family members started protesting demanding action against the doctors who performed the surgery and alleged that one of them, identified as Dr Sanjay Dwivedi, was drunk, the ASP said.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Congress MP from Amethi, K L Sharma, said, “I also enquired about the incident and it came to light that the hospital had initially warned the attendants not to go for surgery considering the patient’s old age and complications. But the attendants requested the doctors to consider surgery. An inquiry has been instituted and action will be taken as per the law.”

He further said that the patient did not die in Amethi. “He was taken to a private hospital in Lucknow, where he was declared dead,” the MP added.
