Amethi will continue as a district. The Board of Revenue on Thursday made a recommendation to this effect to the state government after assessing the demographic conditions of Amethi, which is the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. The number of districts in UP will remain 75.

On April 15,the Allahabad High Court struck down the decision of the Mayawati government to create a new district of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj (CSM) Nagar, which was later renamed Amethi by the SP government. However, the court said that the state government can start a fresh exercise for constitution of the district if it wanted. On the basis of that order, the state government referred the matter to Board of Revenue.

The area of Amethi district will, however,be reduced as the board has recommended cutting off Salon tehsil from Amethi and including it in Rae Bareli. Now Amethi will be left with only four tehsils — Tiloi,Amethi,Gauriganj and Musafirkhana.

Sources said that the Revenue Department will now table the recommendation with a proposal before the Cabinet for approval.

The board meeting, which was presided over by chairman Jagan Mathews, was attended by other members, and the divisional commissioners of Lucknow and Faizabad and district magistrates of Rae Bareli,Amethi and Sultanpur.

An official said Amethi fulfils all conditions for being a district. After cutting off Salon tehsil, its population would be around 15 lakh and it will have nearly a dozen blocks. “While the area of Amethi district would be reduced, its population is sufficient to allow it to continue as a district,” he said.

The official said that recommendation has been made to cut off Salon from Amethi and include it in Rae Bareli after considering the opinion of local people and its distance from headquarters of Amethi and Rae Bareli districts.

The previous Mayawati government had made first attempt to create the district on May 21,2003. However,on a petition challenging the government’s action,a division bench of the High Court stayed the operation of the notification by an interim order on October 9,2003.

While the petition was still pending,Mulayam Singh, who came to power later that year, decided to abolish the new district, and issued the necessary notification.
