A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri has summoned Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair on July 11 in a case registered last year on the charge of promoting enmity.

This came as the Lakhimpur Kheri Police obtained a warrant against Zubair, just hours after the Supreme Court granted him five days’ interim bail in connection with a case in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur.

The case in Lakhimpur Kheri was filed in September last year on a court directive. On Friday, the police moved a local court, obtained a ‘warrant B’ against Zubair, and served it at Sitapur district jail, where he is lodged.

“The court has summoned Zubair on July 11,” said Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sanjiv Suman. He said it was the jail officials’ responsibility to produce Zubair.

According to the police, one Ashish Kumar Katiyar, who claimed to be a local TV journalist, got the case filed on September 18 against Zubair and Twitter at Mohammadi police station in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Katiyar claimed the accused had circulated false news on content broadcast by his channel, disturbing communal harmony.

He moved court seeking a direction for the registration of an FIR after the local police did not entertain his complaint. Following the court directive, the FIR was lodged under IPC Section 153A (promoting enmity between two groups).

Katiyar did not respond to calls seeking comment.

Superintendent of Police Sanjiv Suman said the investigation into this case is pending.

Two days ago, Zubair was brought to Sitapur from Delhi, where he was lodged in jail in connection with a separate case filed last week.

Zubair has not been granted bail in the case lodged against him in Delhi.

The Delhi Police produced Zubair before a court in Sitapur, which sent him to six days’ police custody in the Sitapur case.

When contacted, Sitapur jail superintendent Suresh Singh said the district police took Zubair’s custody on Friday morning. “A few hours later, Sitapur police brought Zubair back to jail. He has been granted bail in the Sitapur case. Now, two warrants – one each in Delhi and Lakhimpur Kheri—are pending,” the jail superintendent said.
