All 29 corporators from the Samajwadi Party in the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) today submitted their resignation to protest against alleged lack of development in their wards.
The corporators also staged a demonstration at the KMC office and blamed officials for ignoring development in their areas.
KMC Mayor Jagatveer Singh Dron of the BJP denied the allegations, saying there was no partiality in development works in the city.
The SP has 29 corporators and the BJP 27 among a total strength of 110 in the KMC.
Resentment had been brewing among the SP corporators over the past few days. Led by Raj Kishore Yadav,SP corporator from Nawabgaj ward, they reached the KMC office today and held a meeting with Additional Municipal Commissioner Umakant Tripathi. Heated arguments followed, with the corporators denying the officials claims of development. Later, they handed over resignation letters.
Our repeated requests did not have any effect on the KMC administration. No work has been done in our areas. All sewer lines are choked, water supply is erratic, drains are flooded. We cannot face the people now. There is no use continuing in office, Yadav said. Other SP corporators such as Yogendra Kushwaha,Madan Babu,Mohammad Sharia,Sanjay Yadav and Haji Sohail Ahmed agreed with him. We wrote several letters to the mayor but there was no response. No work was done in our area, Yadav said.
The corporators said they would try to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. These officials have a BSP mindset. We cannot appeal for vote under these circumstances, Yadav said. The corporators admitted that they had not approached Urban Development Minister Azam Khan. We will try to present our problems before him. We have apprised Chandresh Singh,City president of SP in Kanpur. He has called us tonight, Yadav said.
Mayor Dron denied any partiality. We have records of every project undertaken by the KMC. I had met the corporators personally and showed them all the papers. It seems that they want political mileage, he said. He added that the corporators misbehaved during the meeting with officials. Their allegations are unfounded. There is equal distribution of works. But I will meet them again and sort out their problems, he said.
