Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav Tuesday campaigned for his party candidate for the Ghosi Assembly constituency bypoll and said that had the BJP government at the Centre and in UP done something for the people of the constituency, they wouldn’t have needed to send so many ministers to campaign for the by-election.
Yadav further said the outcome of the Ghosi Assembly by-election, seen as the first poll battle in Uttar Pradesh after the formation of the opposition INDIA bloc, “will bring a change in the country’s politics”.
“I have been seeing campaigning in Ghosi for the past few days, and there is no minister left who has not come to Ghosi. Multiple ministers visited here; I can’t keep the count. And all those standing here know that there was a minister who was roaming around in farms with a farmer. He asked who will win here…’ Later when a journalist asked the same farmer, he said Sudhakar would win with thousands of votes. These ministers aren’t telling what they have achieved. They couldn’t talk of fuel, fertiliser prices…. These people talk of double-engine. It doesn’t matter. The driver of the engine should be good. We don’t want a driver who runs away,” said Akhilesh addressing a rally in Ghosi Tuesday.
“The ministers who came here did not tell what they had done. They are making different arrangements,” Akhilesh said.
“Even if you have to fight, then fight for your right to vote…because the message of the Ghosi bypoll is not only for UP but also for the country,” the former chief minister said.
“When they will lose among the people, they will send the administration. The administration wants to contest elections,” he said. “The language of our rivals has changed. That is because the poor, farmers; and, farmers are with Sudhakar Singh. Now, the calculation is about what the government at the Centre has done in 10 years, and the UP government in six years. In these years, has the BJP given anything? If they had given facilities, they wouldn’t have had to send an army of ministers today,” Akhilesh said.
Taking a dig at Dara Singh Chauhan, who left the SP to join the BJP, Akhilesh said, “The people who have migrated, have weakened democracy. The people of Ghosi will teach him a lesson.”

Akhilesh said that Chauhan “migrated to the BJP for his own gain and for selfish reasons”.
Talking of his party’s candidate Sudhakar Singh, the SP chief said he is a leader who could be stopped and spoken to at any intersection or road and is accessible to all. “He is one from among you,” Akhilesh said. The Ghosi bypoll, the first test of the combined opposition strength against the BJP-led NDA in UP, will take place on September 5. —With PTI Inputs
