Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Tuesday assured safety of life to the riot victims still living in the relief camps in Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts.
Akhilesh, who is facing flak over the forced eviction of people from the camps, met a 22-member 22-member delegation of people living in the relief camps.
The Chief Minister assured the delegation, led by Samajwadi Party’s (SP) MLA from Maharashtra Abu Asim Azmi, of constituting a co-ordination committee, comprising representatives of district administration and the camp inmates, for executing relief measures.
Azmi had visited the relief camps in the two districts over past two days and had brought the delegation to meet Akhilesh.
Akhilesh also accepted the demands of the relief camp inmates to make arrangements for providing ration cards and to facilitate admissions of children — from displaced families who have settled in their new homes — in schools. The Chief Minister also said that soon the missing persons in the riots will be treated as dead and compensation provided to their families.
Meanwhile, Azmi justified the eviction of people from relief camps by the government. He claimed that most of the inmates belong to the villages where riots did not take place.
“The affected people were satisfied with the relief provided by the state government. They admitted that people from opposition parties were asking them to remain in relief camps so that it becomes an issue,” Azmi claimed.
Azmi said, “The inmates submitted a list of 16 names to be included in the co-ordination committee so that relief operations are carried out smoothly. Akhilesh Yadav has sent the list to Muzaffarnagar district magistrate.”
