A constable of Agras Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team and a villager were shot dead while a constable of Agra crime branch suffered gunshot injury in an exchange of fire between police and a gang of criminals in Barsana police station area of Mathura district early on Thursday morning.
Mathura SSP R K S Rathore said the incident took place when the police teams from Agra,accompanied by local police,raided the house of an arms supplier at Hathia village in Barsana area and were returning after making his arrest and recovery of arms and ammunition.
\We did not conduct a search operation in the village to nab the criminals today following the death of an innocent in the cross firing, he added.
Agra SSP Subhash Chandra Dubey said that police teams of SWAT and crime branch had arrested three accused – Bheem and Akhtar of Kosi area of Mathura and Sunil Bhanwar of Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh – while Sunil was handing over delivery of five .32 bore pistols and cartridges to Bheem and Akhtar around 11. 30 pm yesterday. They were arrested near a petrol pump at Barsana town.
Dubey said the teams from Agra sought help of Barsana police to raid house of another member of gunrunning racket – Khalid alias Khulli – at Hathia village following information collected from the arrested accused.
The police teams raided Khalids house around 3.15 am and arrested him with a .315 bore rifle and two .32 bore pistols along with the cartridges. While they were about to move from the place,a gang of criminals gathered there and started firing in an attempt to free Khalid from police custody,said the SSP.
He also said that in an exchange of fire,a bullet hit SWAT team member Satishs neck while crime branch constable Premveer suffered gunshot injury on his leg. The police team somehow left the place with the injured policemen and the arrested accused.
The injured were taken to Maheshwari Hospital in Mathura where Satish was declared brought dead while the condition of Premveer was stated to be stable,Dubey confirmed.
Mathura SSP Rathore said they reached Hathia village in the morning to know that Shahabuddin (65) of the village had suffered bullet injury in the cross firing between the police and the criminals and died on the spot.
He claimed that Shahabuddins family members has told the police that he had gone to answer natures call when he suffered the gunshot and died.
