The Rampur district administration has launched a drive against quacks after three members of a family died after allegedly after consuming syrup provided by a quack.
So far,the administration has sealed 56 clinics and six quacks have been sent to jail. Seven quacks have been booked.
District Magistrate N K S Chauhan said the National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against the accused. We will continue the drive till the quacks are eradicated from Rampur. We have constituted seven teams of health officials who are conducting raids in all parts of the district, he said.
Muzaffar (50),a resident of village Bhot Bakkal in Saidnagar block of Rampur,reportedly bought cough syrup from local quack Janki in his village last Tuesday. The syrup was consumed by his wife Zaibunnisa (45) and granddaughter Saireen (4). All three reportedly died within 20 minutes of consuming it.
Villagers lodged a police case against Janki. They also blocked a road demanding compensation for the victims family.
Janki,who lives in same village and has been practising medicine for the past two decades,was arrested on Tuesday. During interrogation he said that by mistake he had handed a bottle of insecticide to the deceased.
Rampur MLA and cabinet minister Azam Khan directed the district administration and health officials to take strict action against such quacks. On the DMs directions,in-charge,Chief Medical Officer Dr M L Pushkar constituted seven teams which raided clinics in rural areas. Seven cases were registered by health officials against quacks and 56 clinics sealed during raids on Wednesday. Six quacks were nabbed and sent to jail.
