A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl died and her nine classmates sustained injuries when the roof of their classroom collapsed at a private school in Sikandra town of Bulandshahr district on Friday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Class III student Sonia. One of the injured students, whose thigh bone was fractured, has been shifted to Meerut for surgery. Other students are undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
Police said classes were going on in Makhan Lal Junior High School when the roof of a classroom collapsed around 2 pm and 27 students got trapped under the debris. The school staff and locals managed to remove the debris and rushed the injured to the district hospital, where Sonia died during treatment.
While the district administration has sealed the school building, an FIR on charges of culpable homicide has been lodged against the manager and owner of the school, Sanjay Saini.
The accused are yet to be arrested.
“Action against Nagar Shiksha Adhikari, whose duty is to check all school buildings, has been recommended to the state government. He is currently on leave without providing any information,” said Bulandshahr District Magistrate B Chandrakala.
She added that directions have been issued to arrange for another building where classes can be held for the time being. “The building should not be far from the old school,” said the DM.
“The school building was in a bad shape. The owner of the school was constructing another building adjacent to it. He had stored building materials on the roof of the school, which could have led to the roof collapsing,” Sikandrabad Station Officer Kushal Pal said.
