As many as eight persons died and 15 others suffered burn injuries when a private bus,which they had boarded,caught fire after a high tension electricity wire fell on it in Fatehpurs Jahanabad town on Tuesday evening.
The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. Both have been referred to a Kanpur hospital.
Fatehpur Circle Officer Anil Kumar Singh said the dead included two children,four women and two men.
Police have,meanwhile,ruled out any foul play. Superintendent of Police (Fatehpur) Rajendra Singh said there were around 35 people inside the bus when the mishap happened. The bus plies between Jahanabad town and Amauli about 30 kms away. Most of the victims were from Jahanabad,said police.
According to police,around 4.45 pm when the bus was standing at Jahanabad area to pick up passengers,an overhead electric wire fell on it,starting a fire. The locals informed the police and the fire department. Since the victims were mostly local residents,their family members arrived on getting to know of the incident and took them to the hospital for treatment.
Alleging laxity on part of administration,locals blocked the road.
BJP state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai while expressing grief over the incident demanded an ex-gratia to kin to passengers killed in the accident.
