A 75-year-old woman and a nine-year-old girl were allegedly raped in separate incidents reported from Ghazipur and Kaushambi districts on Tuesday afternoon.

In Ghazipur, the old woman,a widow, was allegedly raped by a 28-year-old man in a grove near Maharajganj town in Kotwali area. The woman had to be administered four stitches following the sexual assault. Her condition was reported to be stable. The accused has been arrested and sent to jail.

The woman’s house is located in a village in Dildar Nagar area, about 30 km from Maharajganj town, the police said. She had taken an autorickshaw from her village and was coming to meet her daughter in Maharajganj. She got down about a km from her daughter’s house and decided to take rest in a grove, which belonged to one of her acquaintances.

“The accused, identified as Lallan Bind,a resident of Maharajganj, attacked the woman when she was alone in the grove and raped her. Hearing the shrieks of the woman, people from nearby areas rushed to the spot and caught Bind. They thrashed him before handing him over to the police,” said Superintendent of Police (City) Ram Swaroop.

Subsequently, the police rushed the woman to the district hospital. “The woman has been given four stitches due to the sexual assault,” said Ram Murti Singh,in-charge of Kotwali police station, where a case of rape has been registered. Initially,it was believed that the accused may have been under the influence of alcohol. “But a medical examination revealed that he was not under any sort of intoxication,” said Singh.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the accused — married and father of two children — did not have any permanent source of income. “He was usually seen loafing around, often under influence of alcohol,” said Singh.

In Kaushambi, the minor girl,a student of Class IV,was allegedly raped when she had gone to attend nature’s call in a desolate place near her house.

“She had returned from school and had gone to attend nature’s call in the ruins of an old building near her house. It has been alleged that another girl was accompanying her. When they reached the ruins of the building,a young man came there and chased away the other girl. He then raped the nine-year-old and fled,” said Inspector (Manjhanpur) K K Yadav. A case of rape against unidentified assailant has been registered.

The girl was initially taken to the district hospital from where she was referred to Allahabad,as her condition was worsening. Kaushambi Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Singh said: “The girl’s condition is now stable. The victim or her family has not named any suspect. The doctors have found some foreign object inserted in her private parts.”
